Born in 1948 into a pioneer Ferndale family, Andy Westfall was raised in Eureka with his three brothers. All were active in sports and 4-H. After graduating from Eureka High School in 1966, Andy went on to earn a fine arts degree from Cal Berkeley. Then newly married, he and Sandy were off to Okinawa, Japan for a three-year tour in the Navy. The Westfall’s returned home in 1975 to start their family and Andy’s 30-year career in the family stevedore business. His interests in photography, ranching and local history began a quest in 1996 to document ranching in the county culminating in the publication of the first and second editions of Humboldt Heartland…in his “spare time”. The Westfall’s enjoy spending time with family and friends and life on their ranch south of Ferndale.
An immigrant family in California’s Central Valley faces the loss of their land and way of life. One of the few remaining ranching families in the Bay Area watches urban sprawl creep in from every direction. Cowboys work in the shadow of the historic Hearst Castle. Wildlife find refuge on the biggest expanse of private land in Southern California. One of the largest Black landowners in the state discovers Native American artifacts on his ranch. Presented by California Rangeland Trust and directed by Keely Brazil Covello and Michaela Brazil Gillies, You Just Can’t See Them From the Road is a documentary portrait of modern West Coast ranchers—invisible to and misunderstood by the rapidly modernizing society they sustain.
