To honor our ranching partners, who represent both the organization’s history and its future, the Rangeland Trust hosted a Landowner Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, June 2, in Esparto, CA.
The conservation of 100 ranches, a milestone years in the making, brought California’s ranching and conservation communities together to celebrate the growing impact of the California Rangeland Trust.
More often than not, conversations about land focus on what it provides: clean air, fresh water, local food, wildlife habitat, and more. These benefits are visible, measurable, and essential to the health and resilience of communities—a large part of why land conservation exists. Yet when ranchers are asked why they protect their land, their answers often go beyond environmental benefits.
The question of succession weighs heavily on the mind of nearly every rancher: “Who will take over my ranch once I am gone?” According to the USDA, within the next two decades, approximately 70 percent of U.S. farming and ranching operations will confront this issue. While the next generation often assumes responsibility, this isn’t always the case, necessitating careful planning and arrangements to safeguard the operation into the future. For the late Louise Hanson, the original proprietor of the Hanson Ranch, a conservation easement emerged as a cornerstone of her estate planning.
